1965: JFK has been dead for over a full year, and America seems to have finally lost all remaining innocence. The invasion of Vietnam has been launched, and the civil rights movement becomes bloody at Selma. Protest movements are brewing all over. The sexual revolution is fully underway.

In Greenwich Village, two women, a 37-year-old literature professor and a bohemian artist cross paths and develop a close relationship that goes beyond a simple friendship.  Both seem to have had much their lives past by so soon and this seems to be the year of decision, a year at the crossroads, for both Margaret and Alice, and the whole nation.
